Jessie Mackey, 90, of Swan Quarter, died, Saturday, October 7, 2017 at his residence.
Born in Engelhard, NC, August 14, 1927, he was the son of the late Rev. James Andrew Mackey, Sr. and Julia Barber Mackey. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a trustee.
Mr. Mackey was an active member of the NAACP and the Gratitude Lodge 137, he spent most of his working career in the construction industry with McLean Construction in Baltimore, MD. On March 1964 he was awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal for saving the lives of two coworkers in Columbia, SC.
He enjoyed gardening and meeting people throughout the several flea markets in the area where he sold his produce.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 13, 2017 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Michael Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot at Ada and Addison Brown Cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, William L. Mackey, Sr. and wife Merlinda of Greenville and Rickey A. Mackey and wife, Phyllis of Woodbridge, VA; six grandchildren, William L. Mackey, Jr., Kamisha N. Leary, Adrian L. Mackey, Justin T. Mackey, Tracey Spruill and Jermaine Brunson; six great grandchildren and two sisters Vivian Crump and Ina Tillman.
The family will receive friends, Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.

Such a sweet man. He got pecans from me several times. He showed up one day with a fish for us to enjoy. So thoughtful. God received a wonderful angel on Saturday
